Hi I have a yellow crowned amazon the bird is 4 months old i am worried about his feathers they are turning dull and grey on his chest and falling out it may be moulting but on the other hand I was wondering if the bird needs direct sunlight may it be that? His diet is superb very mixed each day his feathers was vibrant green when he first came to me and they are going dull around his chest thanks in advance..

it may be a moult but I think at four months old it may be too early, what you are seeing is the soft grey feathers that lay under the bright green, Amazons can loose there chest feathers in a moult it happens with my Charlie. I have not had a 4 month old amazon I wonder if @DizzyBlue or any other member can help.

Sounds like plucking to me is there something irritating it do you mist or shower ur bird ammies love to get wet

Hi Jordan
Which feathers are turning dull and grey?
A feather is what it is when it is formed and unsheathed.
So if its a white fluffy under down feather its already whiteish grey in colouration.
If your talking about the outer feathers that are green and are saying they are changing colour then they only change colour when they get dirty or damaged say like rubbing against things like toys which removes the pigmentation of the feather turning it black which is called feather bronzing. Somewhere on this site I uploaded a load of photos and a document regarding feathers that shows the different types of feathers and their damages alterations etc sorry a bit pushed for time have an appointment to go to shortly so will have to find it later unless somebody else can find it!
If the feather is an outer feather and it is turning white then its bleaching and that is usually caused by contact with something that is removing the pigmentation of the feather. Would have to see a feather to tell you better as to what your seeing.
But a feather is what it is when its fully formed it isn't altered by the birds diet or body after its formed.
Do you have an avian light up for your bird?
Remember also the first set of adult feathers that a youngster gets after fledging will be trashed basically as babies start getting into all sorts of mischief and naughtiness landing wrong playing like mad things possessed people often thing OMG but its part of the learning system and the first proper moult will sort it out. Your first moult for you baby should be late December early spring time and won't be a full heavy moult it will be a gradual replacement. Damaged feathers that come out now will just be replaced as needed.
Sorry got to dash running late!

Found the thread if you click on the link in Bob's post it takes you to the forum google drive where the document is held. Has piccies of different feathers that had had different kinds of things happen to them, https://theparrotclub.co.uk/community/index.php?threads/feathers.15107/
I wrote it a long time ago for my own website which no longer exists as I moved everything over here.

Will edit this post later and add in another post we have on forum when I find it regarding feathers that will eventually perhaps be of interest to you

Edited to add link referred to above https://theparrotclub.co.uk/community/index.php?threads/feather-moulting-sequence.19741/#post-304320

And it just seems to be his feathers on his chest you may be right about the being dirty there's a picture that might help

Such a beautiful little sweetie :)
Little white fluffy under down feathers showing through look to be moulting out
And time to get the spray misting bottle out and make sure he has regular mistings and a proper bath if he wants too
Spray the water in fine mist mode up into the air above him so it falls like rain rather than at him
