Sneezing

I am sure that Scarlet from Scarlett's parrot essentials would be willing to talk to you about her experiences with Harley it may be good to give her a call just go to her web sight and get her number. She has a few Macaws and is quite knowlegable

Well.
She had digital xrays, and endoscopy examination under anesthetic and they took bloods and swabs from her.
The endoscopy revealed some tiny red spots on an area of her mucus membrane inside her. We were given some anti inflammatory drugs and started her on them today.
We were also told that she is over weight!!!
We are now waiting for the lab results and are taking stool samples for 5 days to send off and the vet is going to speak to his fellow vets in california who deals with macaws as he has not seen these spots before.

@TomsMum off course he is going the correct way via vets and iI have never said anything to change that but its good to have people whom have had experienced the same situation that can offer advice and support even if its not a current member

Don't understand you feeling you need to say this Michael...
I was expressing my opinion, in just the same way as you chose to express yours???????

Parrot797 is defo a good person to talk to about macaws (Mike Knight) now there's somebody who's knowledgeable about them but think he too would say vets vets vets and a ruddy good avian vet is what's needed

wonder if it's scott mcdonald now he's a dude and a half :) did a brilliant write up on bad beaks amongst other things

I was agreeing with you of course vets are the best for the bird I was not on about the bird I was talking about the birds owner when people can give the best support members or non members so please do not get me wrong there is nothing personal intended and at times of my Claude and his problems Scarlett was very supportive and helpful to me.

We all do our best to help and support each other when we can.
I am pleased you have some medication to start him on and that investigations are being done. Do keep us up to date.

Richard the vet, called me today with Tangos blood results, and the only abnormality was a slightly above normal range white blood cell count. Liver and kidney tests were all perfect and her cholesterol is good despite her weight problem.

We now need to wait for the cultures to come back and she is taking her anti inflammatory off a spoon so its good there.
We have also put her on a diet and are going to exercise her more.

Last night I heard her sneezing at around 4.00AM so we are moving her medicine time later to help her through the night.

I was out a lot yesterday so cant be 100% sure, but I think her sneezing was less when I was there. Plus her nose hasn't been running. Having said all that the symptoms were randomly timed so I have my fingers crossed.

We got a phone call from the vet today.
The cultures from tangos respiratory system showed an unusual bacterial infection that is more common in sheep, cows or poultry. Its possible that its nothing to do with her sneezing symptoms, but it is a bacterial infection that causes respiratory problems in poultry so cant be ruled out. They are sending me a course of antibiotics to start her on.

She is continuing on her diet. Today she was bored with having no food left after late morning so decided to drink a massive amount of water making her wee rather than poo.
I have consulted the vet about letting her food run out late morning and he said it was fine. We are being cruel to be kind.

Fingers crossed that the antibiotics will help sort it out Jeremy...do keep us posted, and we're all here to help.

Bless perhaps hiding food inside things to keep the entertainment going a bit longer may help with the boredom factor?
Glad you have a diagnosis and a way forwards although it's always hard and worrying when they are poorly.

Since we cut her food back she seems more cuddly with us.

For everyone's reference. We were told that the front of her breast bone should be further forward than her breasts. Sort of boat shape.
It's easy to over feed a birdman they still have their wild genetic programme that says "When there's food eat it as thereay be no more for ages"
It's not cruel to have an empty food bowl in the cage, you need to ignore those begging eyes and upside down head gestures and not over feed.
