Collars For Plucking

Need some help here guys. Chicken Legs currently has the 'elizabethan/ lampshade' style collar on. Two because he gets round one far too easily.


My vet is looking to get him a sturdier one with a neck brace style section however the supplier she uses no longer stocks these.


Does anyone know for a fact if their vet stocks these different style collars. Alternativly we can try a bubble collar if we can source one.


If so can you let me know which vet and the practice and which style collar they stock. Pm me if you dont want to post it here.

Peach uses a Elizabethan collar but for mutilation

I always thought a vet didn't collar for pluckin alone x

He plucks his tail and flights making himself bleed with the blood feathers. Those he doesnt pluck he chews up.


Hes been disease tested and we want to see how well and what areas he does grow feathers whilst testing to rule out underlying illnesses causing it. Though i suspect it is habit caused by his past.


But with him getting past the collars its hard to tell whats comibg in and moulting out and whats just not growing.
 
Well after the other days events and how distraught Henni is after being collared I'm now going plan B!!

The lovely peeps at www.babesinthehood.net are making Henni a little jacket with kevlar in, it's fleece lined then a couple of layers of kevlar which is what bikers have as protection light weight steel mesh thats slightly flexi. then the top layer is a patterned material...apparently allows flight and has harness adaptation too! looking at some of these http://babesinthehood.net/Fleece_hoodies/cat3136867_2705299.aspxshe has a sore on her neck from the collar where she has been trying to bend to trash it! :(

Hopefully if she feels safe and secure she will not mutilate for a while and allow things to heal.  Henni loves to snuggle under and in things so hopefully this may be the way to go for us.

I've not known a vet collar for just plucking either  :dntknw:

You of all people know what it's like to live with a mutilator Mandi hence when I needed a voice of reason I put the shout out to try and get hold of you as you know what it's like to live with one. I always find it odd when people say their bird is a mutilator when they mean a plucker :( if they saw how a mutilator will suddenly turn on themselves and just rip a huge hole in their sides whilst screaming in agony yet continue perhaps they would understand the difference....oh how I wish Henni was just a plucker.....but she isn't so no point in crying over spilled milk.

With mutilators and pluckers unless you get to the root cause of what it is that triggers them and wave a magic wand to wipe it out it's part and parcel of the personality of the little bird in question. Collar is not the answer I always think its merely there to buy time to halt the destruction and allow healing  :dntknw:  not sure how you view it Mandi if you see it the same as me or not?

I wouldn't wish it on anybody to live with one of these but then again I wouldn't be parted from Henni for a million billion zillion pounds either. The collar was just far too distressing for her if you saw what she has ripped out since last night.... heartbreaking and she has taken the scabs off her sides and re-opened the wounds :(  Hopefully the little jacket as she does love to snuggle so much will divert her but keep her in a "feel good factor" mood as she is being snuggled by it.  :dntknw:  I won't hold my breath though....and its not a solution just a time buyer for me.

Plucking and mutilating is so different I have never looked after a mutilator or owned one but My Jade (Jade turquoise parakeet) made a hole in her self owing to internal pain. she was treated and given medication but the hole she had made in herself was horrible.  I am so pleased she recovered and lived a full life and even had chicks. to live with a habitual mutilator and never knowing when something will trigger off the habit would be stressful and worrying.    
 
Ok guys im not here to debate the reasons why we are trying the collars my vet would not recommend it if it wasnt necessary. Im the one who has to deal with him breaking off and chewing through blood feathers, im the one who has to deal with him ripping a hole in his butt when he pulls all his tail feathers out in one go. As ive tried explaining we are also going through disease testing but seeing as he is coming back negative for everything we are also assessing how the feathers are growing in and where to determine if his feather follicles are too damaged in places and if it is at sets points in development he pulls them out.


A jacket will not work on him he stresses out and chews till its gone. The collar does not bother him he can just get round it which defeats the point of it.


Now with all due respect can we stop with the plucker vs mutilator debate and just stick to advising on what vets can source which collars so we can get Chicken Legs new collar sorted. I really dont care if he stays oven ready for the rest of his life but if there is a chance they will help or just even help us determine the root cause i owe it to him to try it.
 
Sorry amelia it was just that Henni has started to mutilate again and ended up at the vets and Mandi had a horrible time yesterday hence our off topic conversation of mutilators.

If your vet knows were they got the original collar from you should be able to trace the manufacturer and thereby ask them who they have recently supplied to and that way narrow down who has some stock and would supply on to your vet for your birdie. If your vet has never had this particular collar in before we will have to go another route find the image on google and ping it to me I will track it backto manufacturer and try and get a response who they have supplied to.
 
Not all vets even stock the Elizabethan collar so I looked and looked online till o found some and ordered in bulk

The reason I am choosing the jackets is that they have kevlar between the layers of material which is a light weight stainless steel mesh and even Henni as determined as she is ain't gonna get through that stuff ...well unless she hires a ruddy welding kit!!  It's the stuff that keeps bikers safe...

I did see a new type of collar idea a while ago and that is made from a cone shape but its out of vegetable tanned leather light enough, strong enough to buy you time for healing to take place, and soft enough when in contact with skin to not make it sore. http://www.premiumpinecones.net/catalog/item/6960315/6969649.htm 

Of the above two previous posts which one was you thinking of and I will try and see if we can get a location on one or two! 
 
Im trying to find which vets stock which collars. I know i can import from america but i dont want to buy a whole set for one collar when there are vets that already have collars in stock over here.


He cant wear a jacket of any kind. He rolls around the floor flinging himself off things screaming whilst trying to rip it off.
 
it was the style of collar i was trying to ascertain not buying them from america once i know which your looking for then will try to help you locate one over here from a vet

An Amazon at think parrot show last year had a harness on with a fleece over the top, don't think he was a plucker just a fashion statement, but he seemed very happy in it!
 
Sorry Captain Howdy but I am still confused as to what style collar you are after?? sorry if im being dumb have tried googling collars for parrots but not having much luck, I would be more than happy to ask my avian vet if he stocks them or can get hold of them but I need to know exactly what your looking for :)
